Pee-Rades

There were over two dozen parades in Uptown alone over the course of the week and half prior to Mardi Gras. Each is put on by a Krewe and includes floats, marching bands, and other forms of entertainment. Some were during the day, but most took place at night. Krewe members all dress in elaborate costumes and wear face masks. Each Krewe has "throws" that parade-goers are attempting to acquire. All of the Krewes throw beads, but most have personalized strands with their emblem, cups, doubloons (small plastic coins), and then a variety of other items (frisbees, plastic swords, plush toys, soft footballs, etc.)

Some members of the Krewes ride horses.

Most Krewes have some sort of "royalty" at the beginning of the parade.

Sometimes folks attempt to throw their beads back at the floats to have them catch on something like this alligator's mouth.
There were tons and tons of marching bands from both local schools and out of state that marched between the floats. Often there were cheerleaders/dance teams with the bands as well.

Flambeaux guys were in a few of the night parades. Back in the day they were the only source of light for the floats. Today it is more for fun, considering we have that magical thing known as electricity these days!

There were often elaborate light displays on the floats. The feathers around the lady are actually being supported by a large hook behind her for balance and to relieve some of the weight.
